Other Collaborators

The goals of ULTRA-MIA include not only research, but also community engagement and collaborative education. To this end, we have established collaborations with several community-based organizations, including:

Earth Learning Institute

We have initiated a working relationship with the Earth Learning Institute, a Miami-based nongovernmental organization dedicated to the development of a more sustainable urban region, both within the bounds of the urbanized area and between that and the protected areas of the Everglades and Biscayne Bay. Dr. Gail Hollander participated in the Greater Everglades Foodshed Summit, organized by Earth Learning and held July 12-13.

Youth L.E.A.D. Miami

We have initiated collaboration with Youth L.E.A.D. (Learning Environmental Activism through Democracy) Miami, a local nongovernmental organization dedicated to working in the local school system conducting workshops on environmental justice and food justice. We have identified key common interests in using GIS to map urban tree canopy and urban gardens.

Institute for Regional Conservation

IRC is a local, non-governmental organization dedicated to the protection, restoration, and long-term management of biodiversity on a regional basis, and to the prevention of regional extinctions of rare plants, animals and ecosystems. As a project collaborator, IRC is helping us to identify plants and habitats at risk to sea level rise in Miami-Dade County.

FIU Research Institute for Economic and Social Policy

ULTRA-MIA has partnered with FIU’s Research Institute for Economic and Social Policy (RISEP). Working with RISEP we are producing a white paper on the dynamics of neighborhood change as they relate to income disparities. As a result of this collaboration we will be able to overlay neighborhood change and gentrification data with sea-level rise data in order to produce a vulnerability map.
