Graduate Course
Architecture and Urban Planning
Instructor Marilys Nepomechie
In this course architecture graduate students met with officials from the South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) to discuss the challenges that climate change will impose upon existing water management structures. Following this discussion, the students set out to design adaptation plans to begin exploring possible avenues for mitigating the effects of sea level rise and storm surge flooding. As part of their master's project, the students presented their designs and models to the SFWMD and ULTRA team, sparking an engaging conversation about the future direction of urban planning in Miami.

Co-instructors Jim Heffernan, Laura Ogden and Rosanna Rivero
This course serves several important goals:
- identify students with interests relevant to the research group,
- provide those students with experience, and
- contribute to data collection and analysis for the project.
The course is linked to the NCEAS-supported Distributed Graduate Seminar in Sustainability Science, led by the University of Minnesota and including faculty and students at Harvard, Princeton, Cornell, Arizona State, and UNAM (Mexico). We are pleased to report that the course has an enrollment of 20 students at FIU, including four undergraduates and graduate students from Engineering, Earth and Environment, Global and Sociocultural Studies, Biological Sciences, and Hospitality Management.
