Applied Field Ecology

Syllabus

The course objectives are:

  1. to learn in a hands-on way about the major south Florida ecosystems and their important management issues, and
  2. to gain experience with sampling strategy, field methods, and effective interpretation and reporting of ecological data for management and scientific purposes; and
  3. to successfully carry out a group project contributing to existing knowledge of the landscape ecology of a portion of Miami-Dade County.

In August 2011, Mike Ross gave a presentation at the Ecological Society of America meeting in Austin, TX on "Humanized tree assemblages in a barrier island landscape: Key Biscayne, Florida"

Resulted in many undergraduate research papers and presentations made to the class covering a wide range of relevant topics including: Urban Gardens, Green Roofs, Residential Solar Electricity Usage, Making Miami more Bicycle Friendly, Solid Waste Efficiency, etc.
